Thursday pre closing Lotusphere 2009 update

Thursday 22nd January, 2009

I quickly have fallen off the Blog updates, I thought I would have had time!

Well It appears there may be a very good explaination as to why attendance was announced as up 2 percent from last year. So far I have heard that there are approximately 2000 no shows this year. Also, I received information from a Vendor on the show floor that the majority of badges scanned were from IBM and they were listed on their badges as "late" or "last minute" registration.

It will be interesting to here how, or even if, this is mentioned in tomorrows closing session.

Sunday update

Monday 19th January, 2009

Heading to bed, Sunday was a packed day, Finished the day with a Great Notes Linux on Ubuntu 8.04 LTS session. It truely was what a show and tell session should have been. Final session on Turtle's guide to Lotusphere was a fun and entertaining.

The reception party was good, then went to local IBM customers rep party where I was given misinformation about Lotus Foundations, Met a software vendor at the Dolphin bar that corrected that info, and provided accurate more complete information.

Met up in the Dolphin bar for great stories

Sunday Jumpstarts and observations

Sunday 18th January, 2009

Today the day started off early with Jumpstart JMP301 Lotus Foundations at 8AM. Not a bad turn out for an early morning session. Considering the audience, (Resellers) the turn out was good. This appliance is billed as the all in one solution for a Small Business, if offers everything from DNS, Firewall, HTTP, email, FTP, spam filtering, anti-virus, can run Domino, Deploy Notes clients, File Sharing, AND MORE!. This is the total solution for small businesses from 1 to 500. The best part is it is autonomous, it can monitor and restart and reconfigure itself as needed. No IT staff required. Pretty big claims but it also comes with high praises from the people using it today. Definitely worth looking into!

The second session was a detailed look at Foundations and a step by step install of the server. The first hour was slides and the second... which I didn't stay for, was showing the install, i got up when they said, we have preset up the install to this point... I then proceeded to the alternate session on my list that was very well done, The A-Z of IBM Domino security features. This session hosted by Gab Davis and Andrew Polk was very well done. The session was packed full, very rare for a Sunday Session that is being repeated.

Observations:

Attendance is down, as concluded by a single Opening General Session, scheduled for tomorrow. No surprise, considering the economy. But I have to say for selfish reasons that I prefer a single OGS versus being split into two groups and some filler session (i.e. last years Lotus Solon mess, I will never forget the 20 something female game designer, that said she would prefer to be in a virtual game than living in real life, UGH!)

I am not happy to hear that the MP3's will be sold this year, and not provided free of charge, especailly after the poor delivery method last year.

Backpacks are made very cheaply this year. (minor point, but still worth mentioning)

off to the next session!

Checked in at the Swan Hotel

Saturday 17th January, 2009

I wearing shorts and a short sleeve polo shirt already! The weather is 62 degrees and sunny. I just got into my room and unpacked, seems  there was a little mix up at check in, so they upgraded my room to a junior suite. Big screen LCD TV and a nice view of the lake, Oh Yeah! Must be karma... I was asked to give up my isle seat on the plane so two women could sit together, no arguements so far!

Lotusphere

Saturday 17th January, 2009
As I sit here in the airport I can't help but feel fortunate. I am leaving a very cold 10 degree day in Milwaukee, WI. , heading for a much warmer Orlando, FL. This is the first time I can remember not running into any local IBM reps at the airport. In the past it has been a tradition running into someone on the first Midwest flight out on Saturday morning. Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry

Twitter

Friday 16th January, 2009
Last night I took the time to create my twitter account, that will allow me to participate in the idocheckin sites setup at Lotusphere  this year. I also added a twitter wiget to the sidebar of the site. After getting the desired color and options, I mentioned this to a  couple people at work, and attempted to show them. When they logged onto the site there was nothing but a big empty wiget! Thanks to the web filtering product that my employer uses it was filtered from the site  So the current widget is now posted, with a nice funky blue that doesn't really fit with the rest of the site, but it now can make it through the filter.

Finally, the release of the Lotus Notes 8.5

Wednesday 7th January, 2009
Personally I find it hard to believe the release of Notes 8.5 coinciding with Macworld was part of a master plan.  If that is truly the case, Once again you have to wonder where Marketing's head is at.

Last year at Lotusphere during the opening session IBM stated that they were targeting a late summer 8.5 release. Then a couple days into the conference I was talking to one of the developers and they offered what they considered their target of late fall. Around April I had another update, plan on a mid November release.

So here we are the first week of January and like everyone else I was left wondering "what is IBM waiting for?" Well according to Ed's blog a couple days ago,  posted  Here: we now know...

"The decision to release 8.5 today and announce at Macworld Expo will attract a lot more mainstream media attention for Notes and Symphony than if we had waited for Lotusphere or quietly released in the last week of 2008.  I love the surprise factor., too, though it has been admittedly different to sign up for a "no pre-announce" approach.  Hopefully the hints and comments I made during December now become clear.  Our engineering organization knew the importance of meeting their goal to complete this project in 2008, but for a change, we decided that the marketing opportunity was much stronger to coincide with our first ever exhibition of Notes at Macworld Expo. "

Sounds like it was convenient way to attract some free press or IBM may have just be the recipient of dumb luck. That is of course, if you view  announcing at what others are are calling the the most disappointing Macworld expos yet, a great plan at all.

Happy New Year!

Thursday 1st January, 2009
Wishing everyone a Happy and Healthy New Year.

A new tradition that has formed in our home is the annual viewing of the Rose Bowl Parade, the floats are the most amazing creations of organic material and colors.  We are amazed at the creativity and detail that put into each one.

The new year brings a yet another Lotusphere conference in the coming weeks. (More about that in a future post)

Which brings me to my next topic "More Blog Posts!!" This site does more than serve as my blogging website. It is my test environment that is not offered at my place of employment, and if your wondering "No, I do not work for small company"

I plan on leveraging the Linux operating system more this year, I am expecting (and hoping) that with economy in the state that it is in that in, more businesses will be open to this operating system, as it has matured greatly.

Like everyone else it will be interesting to see just how well the new President will do in his term. There are a lot of people counting on the promise of new jobs and stronger economy.

This year I must focus on eating right, exercise, and finding a way to keep my stress levels down. 2008 was not a banner year for me in that regard.
