The idea, get out of the office for awhile and have some fun, while learning more about our cameras and photography. To date it has been both fun and a challenge. I saved the file to my workstation and opened the file in an EXIF viewer, (those of you familiar with you cameras and image files may know about this metadata stored in the image itself)

Metadata from image file:
Adobe XMP Core 4.2.2-c063 53.352624, 2008/07/30-18:05:41
        <xmp:creatortool>Adobe Photoshop CS3 Macintosh</xmp:creatortool>
        <xmp:ModifyDate>2009-07-24T02:38:54-05:00</xmp:ModifyDate>
        <xmp:CreatorTool>Adobe Photoshop CS3 Macintosh</xmp:CreatorTool>
        <xmp:CreateDate>2009-08-20T18:16:45-05:00</xmp:CreateDate>
        <xmp:MetadataDate>2009-07-24T02:38:54-05:00</xmp:MetadataDate>

You will notice the image was not only created in Adobe Photoshop CS3, but it was created back on July 24th, the same week Brett Favre was going to announce IF he was going to play for the Vikings or stay retired. We all know now that he would tell the Vikings organization that he would stay retired on July 28th. Then after training camp change his mind and signed with the Vikings after all.

Some people believe that was the plan all along, I am in no way stating this is conclusive evidence either way. It could just mean that the Vikings were anticipating that Brett was going to play.

I do find it interesting nonetheless. (and Yeah, I am a Geek!)

Photo and captions provided by chaplovejoy on Flickr. Please click on picture to be taken to Flickr for more info, bigger pix, and chaplovejoy's photo stream

Sunday I found myself in the garage ready to attempt the repair of Bogen / Manfrotto 3265 grip action ball head. I had just read a posting on the web about a guy who had repaired his with a couple of washers, said it took him 15 minutes. So I figured, "what have a got to lose?" My tripod head had become so unstable, it was time to do something.

I grabbed the appropriate allen wrench and started removing the screws. Once they were removed I gently pried the two halves apart and... BOING! Out shot a spring and plastic piece behind the trigger, then... BOING!... AGAIN! The bolt in the middle was the the second spring loaded projectile that flew across the garage. Then, the metal bushing fell out, UGH! This wasn't going well!

Luckily I found the pieces laying around the garage. I cleaned the grease from the ball and the inside collar where the ball sits. I managed to reassemble everything back fairly quick, with the exception of the spring and plastic piece behind trigger. When I attempted to put the top half of the head together, the compressed spring and plastic behind the trigger would pop back out and fall at my feet. The trick to assembling the head, was to put the two halves together, leaving just enough room to gently compress the spring and slide the plastic piece into place. Gently apply pressure to clamp the top of the head together, leaving the bottom half lose enough to align the tiny set screw w/nut (located on the bottom in the back of the head) with a small allen wrench keeping it accessible when tightened together.

A third arm with hand would have worked preferably better, but I digress. Today, I spent time searching the Internet and found this great picture above, which would have come in handy when I was putting humpty dumpty back together again.

Thanks to "chaplovejoy" for taking the time to photograph the parts and adding captions, making the repair a little easier for the next person. The repair is is not as bad as it sounds. I am happy with the results and it works like new again! No washers were required.

One final tip, there is a little set screw in the back of the head near the base, if the ball head is just starting to come lose, don't take it apart! try tightening the screw a little at a time first.

Be sure to click on the picture to take you to flickr and read other peoples hints and tricks, or post a Thank You to "chaplovejoy".

Pictures used with permission.

Found this today that more eloquently states one of the points I was trying to make the other day. This is from the Motley Fool Investment site the link is provided below:

Yes, RIM is once again the market leader. NPD Group reports that the BlackBerry Curve outsold the iPhone during the first quarter. What Rick isn't telling you is that Research In Motion benefited from garage-sale tactics that boosted its numbers. Verizon (NYSE: VZ) offered Curve shoppers a "buy one, get one free" promotion in Q1.

More telling, I think, is that the BlackBerry Storm, a would-be iPhone killer, was nothing of the sort. The Storm was third behind the iPhone on NPD's list. RIM's BlackBerry Pearl ranked fourth, while T-Mobile's Android-powered G1 placed fifth.

And while we're talking numbers, let's set the record straight when it comes to the iPhone. While it's true that iPhone unit sales fell sequentially, revenue improved 22% over the same period. Year over year, iPhone unit sales doubled and revenue quadrupled.

http://www.fool.com/investing/general/2009/05/06/im-still-bullish-on-apple.aspx

I have been following the news articles around the Blackberry mobile device sales beating out the iphone in first quarter. First off I I really don't care what the results are honestly, it doesn't affect me either way. However, I am really getting tired of what I would consider is poor reporting. Here is a quote from the article:

"Verizon Wireless' aggressive marketing of the BlackBerry Storm, and its buy-one-get-one BlackBerry promotion to its large customer base, contributed to RIM capturing three of the top five positions (in U.S. smartphone sales)," NPD's Ross Rubin said in a statement. "The more familiar, and less expensive, Curve benefited from these giveaways and was able to leapfrog the iPhone, due to its broader availability on the four major U.S. national carriers."
The results reverse a trend that at one point last year had the iPhone outselling all Blackberries combined.

Read more: http://www.nydailynews.com/tech_guide/2009/05/05/2009-05-05_blackberry_curve_outselling_iphone.html#ixzz0EgvTnkRN&B

How about a few facts about the iPhone. For instance, is there anyone out there that doesn't not know that Apple is getting ready to release a new model. I personally know of a handful of people that would buy an iPhone right now, if it weren't for the fact that the release dates is so close. Then there are the people that will never buy an iPhone from AT&T because of bad experiences with the company, meaning its doing amazingly well given the fact that one retailer has exclusive selling rights. Most have to wait or dump their contract to get one.

The Blackberry Storm and Curve are the most recent devices available, plus their apps store was released earlier this year, which created buzz.

In my opinion Blackberry had to do something, as there is a big shake up coming to the smart phone market this summer. The Palm Pre device is looming, with a lot marketing hype. (can you tell I am not convinced, not one report I have read has supplied a good reason as to why it is a better option to the other smartphones, just hype! Someone needs a head slap on the price too!) The Apple iPhone is poised for some major changes, new OS version, new hardware, and possible changes to the app store. Lastly there is the Android device from T-Moble, which is generating interest based on it open development platform.

RIM should be happy about Q1 as the only Quarter it will beat any other device this year in sales. The competition is about to heat up all summer long,

I have owned my Mac Mini less than a week and I am shutting down my Windows PC without worry of missing it.. This little thing is just amazing. At 6.5" x 6.5" x 2" it takes up almost no room at all on my desk. doesn't make a sound while running other than an occasional buzz of the DVD drive upon wake up.

I plugged in my monitor, keyboard, and Logitech trackball, turned on the power and watched as it came right up as if everything had been plugged in since day one. No installing of devices, just up and running.

It wasn't all roses though, I plugged in my Western Digital hard drive to transfer my itunes account and Crash! - (kernel panic)
Its funny that all I heard from people is that Mac's never crash but some how within less than 24 hours mine did!

All things considered though I have to admit it is very easy it is to use. Installing applications is almost laughable. The first time I installed an app I thought there must be more to it than that!

I was reading someone's blog the other day and a comment was made about the Mac vs PC advertisements. He said that he DVR's every show he watches and fast forwards though the commercials, except when he runs across a Mac ad. Instead he stops, rewinds and watch it, he even admitted that he didn't own a Mac! I had to laugh because I do the same thing, but now I can watch them and laugh as an owner!

Normally I don't comment on advertising, and I hate to beat a dead horse. I thought it was ironic however, that I was listening to a talk radio show about the importance of advertising during economic downturns. The idea is that continued advertising keeps the product fresh in the consumers mind. It also instills confidence in the company as they continue to keep their presence known.

Around the same time a flurry of activity started up in the Lotus community (http://planetlotus.org) about Lotus Notes and the continued lack of advertising for the product. While many believe it is a superior product to Exchange and Sharepoint, its getting harder to get that message through to people these days.

After doing a little searching on the Internet I was able to find this article which is very interesting reading:
http://mdurwin.wordpress.com/2008/11/03/now-is-not-the-time-to-skimp-on-advertising-and-marketing/

At the conclusion of the article it states:

"As far as the end of the question as to what distinguished the companies that did well during the Depression? They were the companies that kept their name in front of the public and created brand name recognition even during the worst of times."

Is the Lotus brand suffering do to lack of advertising? The community seems pretty adamant about it! Only time will tell.

I couple of weeks ago now, I took the plunge and gave up my blackberry for an iphone. I was well prepared for the shortcomings, no copy/paste, short battery life, and limited integration with our company email system.

But the fact is I don't miss my Blackberry all that much. Sure there is the occasional time I thought it would be convenient to check my calendar on the blackberry, but I have had subtle adjustments that I have had to make and they are tolerable. Life without the iphone would be difficult now. It is so nice to have apps for a lot of the things I used to use on the blackberry. checking movie times, searching for a directions, looking up something quickly on the interest (and be able to read it) as well as just having a great smooth interface. I really thought it would be harder for me to make the switch. I will say the social networking apps on the iphone are a breeze to navigate and a pleasure to read on the large iphone screen.

Best purchase I have made in years!

I have been holding my tongue regarding the MP3's that were clouded in mystery since opening day of Lotusphere. The conference materials and the online site both stated the MP3's were for sale via the vsi media booth, the same company that sells the videos. The person running the booth was very interested in selling them, but after speaking to someone from IBM at the conference he said they would be made available.
Finally there has been an update posted on the Lotusphere online site.

On Friday, February 6, 2009 at 4:00 pm eastern time, Lotusphere Online 2009 will close. Registered conference attendees will still be able to access presentation PDFs and soon, presentation MP3s, in LotusLive.

Looks like if you want access to them you have to join the LotusLive site via your invitation. After creating my account and poking around a little, I am not impressed. Hopefully things will get better by the end of the week. As for now I have no access to do much of anything and I keep getting this fancy little error.
